The Look: Undone Eyes

The newest iteration of smoky eyes requires all of us to lighten up. “Black or charcoal can be too much for every day, but smudged brown shadow works with any eye color, anytime,” says Christine Cherbonnier, who did all the makeup here.

And P.S., Cherbonnier did each of these looks entirely with natural beauty products, which—spoiler alert—deliver just as much oomph as synthetic versions.

Smoky eyes are meant to look messy, so you’re off the hook as far as perfection is concerned.

To copy what you see here, use a small brush to line your top and bottom lash lines with metallic brown shadow.

“Buff it out with a brush to create the smoky shape, then add a darker brown shade on top for depth,” says Cherbonnier.

When your shadow is good to go, define your lash lines with a black eyeliner pencil. Soften the line with your finger or a brush, add a couple of coats of mascara, and that’s it!

Pro tip: To avoid competing with eye-catching shadow, stick with a subtle lip color. “If you’re using something matte, add a little gloss, balm, or even a cream highlighter on top for a touch of moisture,” says Cherbonnier.

The Look: Power Lips

When top beauty writers feel the need to unpack the power of red lipstick, that’s when you know the iconic color has become more than just a much-loved trend. To make the look feel fresh for 2019, try an Old Hollywood red with a bit of shine.

Depending on the state of your lips, you might need to prep first to create a smooth canvas for your color (bold shades show everything).

To get rid of flakes, gently slough your pout with a lip scrub or a wet toothbrush. Apply a moisturizing balm (not too much) followed by your chosen red.

Lips should be the focal point here, so use minimal makeup on the rest of your face. Just do quick swipes of liner and mascara to frame your eyes, then use your fingers to apply a teensy bit of highlighter to your lids and the tops of your cheeks. Gorge.

Pro tip: For a perfectly polished look, dip a cotton swab into a little face powder and trace around your lip line. This easy trick will clean up any smears and help prevent your lip color from bleeding.

The Look: Golden Highlight

The sheer volume of shimmery golden looks that we spotted on the spring runways are proof that our collective passion for highlighters hasn’t dimmed. Cherbonnier loves not only what warm metallics do for the complexion, but also praises the boost that they give to the psyche. “Gold makeup always makes me feel like I’m in Miami, even if it’s five degrees,” she says.

Sweep an earthy, gold-flecked shadow all over your eyes, then smudge the inner corners with a pale gold highlighter (you can do this with your fingers or a tiny brush).

Next, grab a darker, golden highlighter and get to work. “Apply the shimmer just below your cheekbones to subtly contour then glide it over the areas where the sun would naturally hit your face, like top and the sides of your forehead. Just follow the top of the arch of your brows and extend out and down,” says Cherbonnier.

Last but not least: Slick your lips with a nude gloss. Choose a shade with a hint of sparkle or dab highlighter on top to add a touch of glimmer.

Pro tip: For streak-free highlighter, be hands on. “Instead of applying a highlighting stick directly to the skin, I put it on the back of my hand, then I use my fingers to put it where I want it,” says Cherbonnier.

The Look: Statement Blush

You can always count on rosy cheeks to pop up as an on-trend look for spring, but this season it’s about being a little extra with it. The goal is to let it stand out and flaunt your shamelessly feminine side. “Just embrace it,” says Cherbonnier.

For seamless color and easy blending, opt for a cream blush or go the efficient route and try a double-duty product like Burt’s Bees All Aglow Lip & Cheek Stick. Dust your face with powder first to help the blush stay put, then apply the soft color to the fleshy part of your cheeks, blending outward toward your ears.

After you do both cheeks, assess your handiwork. If you want to add more, go for it. Use the same color on your lips and don’t hold back with mascara. “Flushed cheeks look very youthful and thick lashes work perfectly with them,” says Cherbonnier.

Pro tip: If you have hair that tends to cover your face, pull it back into a ponytail or an updo to show off your chic cheeks.

The Look: Shades of Plum

Now here’s the perfect trend for anyone who gets overwhelmed by makeup palettes with a gazillion different shades. To get this look, all you have to do is use plummy tones on your eyes and lips—no need to worry about what goes with what.

“I love that this trend gives you two opportunities to do a pop of color,” says Cherbonnier. “Purples are big for spring, but you could wear them any time of the year.”

To give your eyeshadow more staying power, dab a little concealer onto your lids first. “Creating that base also intensifies the color,” says Cherbonnier. Once your eyes are prepped, use a small angled brush to apply a deep purple shade along your top and bottom lash lines, then blend the color all over your lids.

For dimension, layer a shimmery lavender shade over the dark purple and smudge a light neutral color onto the inner corner of your eyes—it’ll make them pop like crazy. Finish with a coat or two of black mascara, then swipe on a soft purple liquid lipstick to complement your eyes.

To add a spring-y glow to your complexion, apply a gold highlighter onto your cheekbones and the top of the brow bone toward the outer corner of the eye,” says Cherbonnier. “Your skin will look so fresh.”

Pro tip: Cherbonnier recommends blurring your lip color for an effortless vibe. “Gently press your fingers on top, particularly around the edges, so that it doesn’t look drawn on,” she explains.
