mask and makeup trend

It’s 2020. We’re masking and we’re matching. Take one scroll through Instagram or the hashtag #maskmakeup and you’ll see beauty pros and novices alike wearing a mask (thank you!) and donning a coordinating eye look. We’ve matched our bra and underwear, we’ve matched our nails and our lipstick, and now it’s time to match our masks and our makeup.

To find out exactly how it’s done, we tapped Erin Parsons, Maybelline Global Makeup Artist and celebrity makeup artist to Gigi Hadid and Josephine Skriver, to share the best tips and tricks for coordination. “Start playing with this idea by using a softer-toned mask,” Parsons says. “As you become more comfortable, then go for a brighter or more unique tone, and play with the eyes as a contrast that complements. For instance, a burnt orange mask would look gorgeous with royal blue eyeshadow.” (Parsons’ current favorite is Maybelline’s Color Strike in Ace!)

Below, take some inspiration from 10 different masked and matching beauty looks to live your best socially distanced life.

Blue Violet

Collina Strada makes some of the coolest sustainable wares and face masks, so it’s no surprise the brand’s beauty looks are on point. Get inspired and shop Collina Strada masks here.

The Ultimate Glam

All other beauty looks can sit down. The eyes, the nails, the glitter, the sparkle, the mask. This look demands you watch it on replay again and again.

Pink Panther

If you’ve been following Erin Parsons on Instagram, you’ll see she’s having lots of fun during quarantine with some of the best at-home beats. Go pink and black with this glam inspired by ’60s icon Peggy Moffitt.

Eye See You

Draw attention to the star of the face (your eyes!) with this negative space cat eye. The black liner pairs perfectly with a black mask. Black is the new black.

A Work of Art

Someone needs to give Vanessa, @vanessa_gyimah, an award for this face beat. It’s 10s across the board, even down to the matching nails.

You Give Me Butterflies

So technically celebrity makeup artist Nick Barose’s mask and beauty look is not the same as the rest, but it still deserves a special shoutout. The butterfly trend is very much back and a face covering is a great place to land a fluttery friend.

Pretty in Pearls

The nail and pearl trend was huge last year, but now it’s time to move those adornments to your eyes.

Pops of Color

The look of summer! A rainbow eye pairs perfectly with this floral mask.

Colors That Complement

Complementary eye and mask colors play well together. If you’ve got a powerful mask, go for a more subtle eye look, like this green wing.

Mellow Yellow

If you want to level up to Advanced Beauty Player, match your hair color and your face mask. The trend has already been seen on Arizona Senator Kyrsten Sinema. Très chic.
